When the MultiVersus online store began to lose player engagement, their team took on the challenge of reimagining its visual approach, and I was brought on as a contractor to help. Together, we aimed to breathe new energy into the experience, experimenting with bold, character-driven design directions that kept the store as dynamic and engaging as the game itself.

Challenge/Overview

When I joined the MultiVersus team, the online store was struggling to capture player interest and convert engagement into in-game purchases. The existing assets felt inconsistent across updates, and visual fatigue had started to set in with the community. My role was to help refresh the store experience through bold, experimental visuals — exploring new art directions, styles, and promotional approaches to reenergize the player base and align with evolving brand updates.

Working closely with the art and product teams, I helped test and implement multiple design directions — from vibrant pop-art treatments to darker, cinematic styles — to identify what best resonated with players while maintaining the flexibility needed for frequent content drops and seasonal refreshes.

Process

To reimagine the store’s visual appeal, I began by auditing existing assets to identify patterns of repetition and visual fatigue. From there, I developed a series of refreshed concepts — each exploring different ways to highlight character art, new skins, and promotions while maintaining brand recognizability.

Our team met weekly to review new ideas, share feedback, and align design directions across art, marketing, and production. We collaborated in Figma to prototype visual treatments and streamline approvals, which allowed for quick iteration and consistent documentation as the project evolved.

I worked closely with the art direction and production teams to test several new looks, including high-contrast color palettes, bold typographic treatments, and layered compositions inspired by in-game environments. We iterated quickly, incorporating feedback from creative leadership and early playtest responses to understand what styles generated the most engagement.

Throughout this process, I created optimized assets for Unreal and helped maintain consistency across multiple updates as the game’s overall art style evolved. My role required balancing creative exploration with technical precision — ensuring every design not only looked dynamic but also functioned seamlessly within the store’s interface.

Solution/Results

The final direction combined the boldness of the experimental styles with the clarity needed for a live-service storefront. The refreshed visuals introduced more dynamic compositions, striking use of color, and stronger hierarchy between key offers — making it easier for players to navigate while feeling energized by what they saw.

By leaning into expressive design choices, we helped reestablish excitement around store updates and gave the marketing team more flexibility for future content drops. The new visual language also streamlined production — templates and reusable layouts allowed the team to deliver fresh assets quickly without sacrificing creativity.

While exact engagement metrics weren’t shared across departments, the refreshed assets were consistently praised for bringing new life to the store and better reflecting the game’s playful, competitive energy. The project ultimately helped define a more cohesive visual tone for MultiVersus as it evolved through multiple seasons and style iterations.
